Connectivity becomes software
For thirty years a phone's identity lived in a small plastic card. eSIM already dissolved the card into a profile downloaded over the air; the next step, iSIM, folds the secure element directly into the main processor, so the SIM slot disappears entirely.
The consequence is not cosmetic. When a subscription is software, switching networks, adding a second profile, or activating on arrival in another country becomes an API call rather than a trip to a shop. Connectivity stops being a physical object you hold and becomes a state you provision.
The network gets an API
Mobile networks are becoming programmable. Through CAMARA — an open-source standards project — and the operator-backed GSMA Open Gateway, capabilities that used to be locked inside each carrier are being exposed as standard APIs: verifying a phone number, checking a recent SIM swap, confirming a device's location, or requesting quality on demand.
The direction is a network you can call like any other cloud service, the same way across operators and countries. It is early, and coverage is uneven, but the shape is clear: the network becomes a platform, not just a pipe.

Coverage goes multi-orbit
For the first time, the map of "no signal" is being redrawn from space. Low-earth-orbit satellite constellations now backhaul remote cell sites and, increasingly, connect ordinary phones direct-to-device for messaging and basic data where no tower reaches.
Terrestrial networks are not going away — some 600 submarine cable systems still carry the overwhelming majority of the world's traffic. But coverage is becoming a blend of ground and orbit, and the definition of "connected" is widening to include places a cable never will.
AI changes what flows, and where
Generative AI became the fastest-adopted consumer technology in the network's history, and it is reshaping the traffic itself — not just more of it, but a different mix, and a pull toward doing computation closer to the user at the edge to keep responses fast.
As models move onto devices and into local infrastructure, latency and locality start to matter as much as raw bandwidth. The network's job quietly shifts from moving pages to serving intelligence.
The missing layer: distribution
Every era of the internet resolved one incompatibility. The unresolved one today is 分銷. Mobile data is national by construction — licensed, regulated and settled country by country. Travel, commerce and software are global. Between the world's supply of mobile capacity and the channels that actually reach travellers sits no clean wholesale layer.
That is the layer being built now: an aggregation layer that turns access to many networks into one integration, with provisioning, KYC, metering and settlement handled once. It is the part of the future that is quietly commercial rather than spectacular — and it is exactly where Sudarva sits, as an MVNA and eSIM API spanning 184 countries and 459 networks.
Who gets connected next
The most important number in the internet's future is still the one about people. Roughly 2.1 billion remain offline, overwhelmingly in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, and the barrier is no longer mainly cables. It is cost, devices, digital literacy and a persistent gender gap.
The technologies above — software SIMs, programmable networks, satellite coverage, cheaper capacity — matter most for how fast they close that gap. A future that connects the next two billion is a bigger event than any single protocol that came before it.
